User guide

Pack, check, and come home with confidence.

Follow the highlighted controls in these real LastItem screens. Every example uses fictional data.

Step 1

Create a kit - or start from a template

On the Kits tab, tap + to build a kit. Give it a name that matches the job, trip, setup, or bag, then add quantities and mark anything that must not be missed as Required.

The ••• menu opens starter templates and imports a kit someone shared with you. Templates are copied to your phone, so they are yours to edit.

Step 2

Choose the check you are about to run

Open a kit and choose Departure before leaving, Return when packing up, or Custom when you need a named one-off check.

The list below is your reusable source kit. Tap an active item - or choose Edit item from its long-press menu - to rename it or change its quantity. A new check takes its own snapshot, so later kit edits do not rewrite that check’s record.

Step 3

Count what is actually with you

Tap a row to advance its checked quantity by one. Keep tapping to reach the full quantity; the next tap starts that item over. The summary shows total progress and what remains.

Reset and Finish stay together at the bottom at the same height, while text-only Cancel is safely separated in the top-right toolbar. Text-only Undo appears beside it after your first change. Free checks stay focused without a photo upsell; LastItem Pro makes optional check photos available in Reference.

Close the screen and use its named In progress card on Kits later without losing progress. You can keep more than one Departure or Return check in progress, and each gets its own resume card.

Step 4

Keep private photo references with Pro

Open Reference during a check and choose Add check photos. Each check can keep up to 10 photos, stored and shown in the order you add them. Every thumbnail has its own removal control.

LastItem turns each image into a smaller local JPEG with its image metadata removed. Check photos remain with the record in History and are never included in JSON exports or shared-kit files.

Camera or library

Add the reference you need

Choose Take Photo to open the camera, or choose Choose from Library to select multiple images through Apple’s system photo picker. The menu reports the remaining photo capacity before you continue.

Step 5

Finish deliberately - or cancel safely

Finish records the result in History. If required items remain unchecked, LastItem asks twice before recording an incomplete result; it never silently marks them present.

Cancel ends an active session without changing its source kit. Any progress is retained in History as Canceled, so there is a clear record of what happened.

Every completed Departure is eligible for Recent Departures, which is ordered by completion time. That includes deliberately finished checks with required items missing and checks where nothing was taken. A zero-checked row has a disabled Nothing to return action. Otherwise, you can start a Return from Recent Departures or History. That Return includes only quantities actually checked on the Departure, and requires each of them to come home - even if the source kit changed later.

History names unchecked required items. Finished records stay honest and immutable, but you can delete a test or bad check from its History options.

Step 6

Share a reusable kit, privately

Open a kit, choose More → Share kit, review the contents, then send or save the JSON file using Apple’s share sheet. The recipient opens Kits → ••• → Import shared kit and chooses that file.

Sharing is a one-time file handoff - not live collaboration. It works without a LastItem account or developer cloud. The shared copy includes active item names, quantities, Required state, categories, and notes. It excludes photos, archived items, identifiers, and check history.

Step 7

Keep control of local data

LastItem does not require an account or developer cloud. Your data stays on your device, subject to Apple’s normal device backup behavior, unless you deliberately export data or share a kit file.

In Settings you can review your usage, restore LastItem Pro, export checklist data with Pro, or delete all local data. Delete All Data requires two confirmations and does not remove Apple’s purchase history.

The free version supports two active kits and 25 active items per kit. Pro removes those limits and adds optional local item photos, up to 10 photos per check, and full checklist-data export. Photos stay on the device, have their image metadata removed, and are never included in JSON exports or shared kits. Pro is a one-time Apple in-app purchase, not a subscription.

Important limit

LastItem supports verification - it does not replace it.

LastItem records your manual input. It cannot sense, locate, secure, insure, or prove possession of an item, and it cannot guarantee that an item will not be lost. Physically verify important gear and use appropriate safety procedures.
